PARENTING books are finally getting real, and at least one New York parent has gotten in on the act. Brooklyn’s Beth Harpaz, author of the just-out “13 Is the New 18,” says she realized that young teens were growing up faster and feared “there was no single voice for parents of teenagers.” Although there were lots of books about “extreme scenarios,” Harpaz, a travel editor and mother of two sons, ages 11 and 16, wanted to write a “normal book for normal parents.” She wanted to let parents of young teens know that others have gone there before - and survived. And since she’s from the city, she addresses some issues not common to parenting books - like how and when to let your child ride the subway (it’s New York - they will ride it) and where to let them hang in a tiny apartment with no finished basement (someone else’s apartment).
